We spend so much time cleaning up our digital files that we often forget about the physical machine. Dust, oils from our skin, and crumbs don’t just look messy — they can actually cause your computer to run hotter or make your keys stick.
Now is the perfect time to give your workspace a quick clean up. Here is how to do it safely without damaging your tech.
1. The Screen
Modern screens have special coatings that can be stripped away by harsh chemicals.
The Golden Rule: Never use Windex, glass cleaner, or paper towels. Paper towels are actually quite abrasive and can leave tiny scratches. Use a dry microfiber cloth.
For Stubborn Smudges: If a dry cloth doesn’t work, dampen the corner of the cloth with a tiny bit of distilled water. Never spray the screen directly, instead spray the cloth first, wipe gently, and then use the dry side to buff it out.
2. The Keyboard
Keyboards are a magnet for dust and debris that can settle under the keys and interfere with the sensors.
Step 1: If you are using a laptop, turn it off completely. If you have a desktop, unplug the keyboard.
Step 2: Turn the device upside down and give it a very gentle shake over a trash can. You might be surprised at what falls out!
Step 3: Use a can of compressed air. Spray in short bursts at an angle to blow the dust out from between the keys. Avoid spraying straight down, as that can just push the debris further in.
3. The Vents
If your computer fans are loud, they might be struggling through a layer of dust.
Look for the small vents on the sides or bottom of your laptop (or the back of your desktop). Use your compressed air to clear these out.
A clean machine lasts longer and is much more pleasant to use. It only takes about two minutes, but it makes your whole office feel fresh and ready for work!
