We all have that one folder on our computer — usually the “Downloads” or “Desktop” — that has become a graveyard for old PDFs, random images, and installers we used once. Let’s get it cleaned up by using the One-Year Rule: If you haven’t opened it since last May, it doesn’t need to live on your hard drive.
Here is how to quickly find and clear out that old digital clutter.
For Windows PCs
Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon)
Click on your Downloads or Documents folder
Look at the top of the window and click the Sort button, then choose Date modified
Make sure the oldest files are at the top
Scroll through anything from 2025 or earlier. If you don’t need it, right-click and select the Trash Can icon (Delete)
Don’t forget: Right-click the Recycle Bin on your desktop and select Empty Recycle Bin to actually regain that space!
For Mac
Open Finder and go to your Downloads or Documents folder
Change your view to List View (the icon that looks like four horizontal lines at the top)
Click the column header that says Date Last Opened. If you don’t see it, right-click the header bar and check Date Last Opened
Click that header so the oldest dates are at the top
Highlight the files you haven’t touched in over a year
Right-click and select Move to Trash
Final Step: Right-click the Trash icon on your dock and select Empty Trash
The Benefit
By removing these files, you reduce the clutter your computer has to index. It makes your searches faster and your digital workspace feel more organized. Try to spend just five minutes on this today, you’ll be surprised how much you can clear out!
