Does this happen every month or so, and you just want it to go away?
You get the notice below — you click the X and go about your day — next month, same thing.
Now What???
It’s a bit of a scare tactic to get you to upgrade. Some of the fixes you can do yourself. Let’s start with clearing some space.
- Run Disk Clean Up
- Click Windows (button) + i for Settings
- Click System
- Click Storage
From this screen you will be able to see the categories of files that are taking up space on your PC (it may take a moment to load).
- Click Cleanup recommendations
- Click Temporary Files
- Click See Advanced Options
Read through the options to understand what each item will delete. From here you can check/uncheck the boxes of items you want to remove.
Personally, I would uncheck Windows upgrade log files and Downloads.
You may want to check Recycle Bin for deletion, but only if you are ok with those files being permanently deleted.
- Click Remove Files (button) (near the top of the page)
This simple fix should improve your storage and performance issues.
There are other things we can do to improve the performance on a case-by-case basis. Contact me if you would like additional suggestions based on your personal needed.
NOTE: When in doubt, DO NOT delete the files. Although most of the time mistakes are fixable, it’s better to work with someone who knows what they are doing than to take the chance and delete something that crashes your computer.
